The first trailer of Sonam Kapoor starrer Neerja is out and from the looks of it, there is no doubt that this one’s a winner. Based on the 1986 hijacking of New York-bound Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi by heavily-armed terrorists, the film is a biopic on Indian flight attendant, Neerja Bhanot, who was murdered while trying to save the lives of the passengers of the ill-fated flight.
Sonam Kapoor certainly deserves a pat on the back for bringing out the vulnerability and strength of a 23-year-old lady caught in a bind in the nearly two-and-a-half-minute trailer. The actor has never really come up for much praise for her acting skills, but here, she packs a punch. In an author-backed role, Sonam brings to life ‘Neerja Bhanot’. Or, at least, give us a promise of it.

A word of praise for the support cast, most notably for the veteran Shabana Azmi. As Neerja’s mother, she brings in pathos and tenderness that only a mother can have.

Mark the lines that end the trailer: Iski kundli mein likkha tha, kul ka deepak banegi yeh. Neerja has the promise of becoming that beacon of courage, sacrifice and, in the end, hope.
